The COVID-19 pandemic is unprecedented in our times. And it’s having a significant impact on our economy, most importantly, on employers and employees in British Columbia. The BC government has enacted two new laws, two amendments to the Employment Standards Act recently to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic which will provide some relief to employees and employers. The first is called COVID-19 Related Relief, and the second is an illness and injury leave. So the key thing that is occurring right now in employment law with the COVID-19 pandemic is layoffs. And employers can face significant liabilities if a layoff or termination is handled inappropriately.
