Derek is a lawyer in our Family Law practice group. He is based in our Vancouver office.

Out of all the areas of legal practice, Derek’s interest in family law is rooted in his years of experience studying and working in the Psychology industry, and his true passion in understanding people and sorting out complex matters. Derek always keeps in mind what the client wants and how they wish the goals to be achieved. At the same time, he is cognizant of the importance of being pragmatic and creative in brainstorming with the client for options that they might not have ever thought about.

Derek completed his articles at LK Law. During his articling year, he worked on a variety of family law proceedings and appeared in both the BC Supreme Court and the BC Provincial Court. While in law school, Derek worked as a Caseworker at the Student Legal Services of Edmonton and he appeared in the Alberta Court of Justice for civil and family law matters. He was also an avid mooter while in law school. In 2022, Derek and his moot partner won the Alberta Court of Appeal Constitutional Moot Competition. In 2023, Derek participated in the National Family Law Negotiation Competition where he and his moot partner won the national top representation plan award and the overall third place in the negotiation rounds.

Outside the office, you can find Derek checking out the latest release in the cinema, trying out new restaurants amidst all the amazing options Vancouver has to offer, or simply hanging out with his friends on a beach watching a beautiful sunset.
